GLT Campaign History The GLT campaign aims to raise the public's awareness that irresponsible gum disposal is littering. The campaign also seeks to promote responsible gum disposal. It has been ongoing since June 2006 when a three month pilot campaign was implemented in Dublin, Cork and Bray. The first phase of the campaign was implemented in 2007 and 15 local authorities participated in it. The second phase of the campaign took place in 2008 and was extended to 21 local authorities. The third phase of the GLT campaign was in June 2009 and included 30 local authorities. Each national campaign normally runs for a four month period on an annual basis. GLT campaign format The GLT campaign is run nationally through a variety of media formats such as six-sheet posters, commuter cards, national and regional radio advertising. Bus T-sides, 48 sheet posters and Luas straps appear in Dublin city. 48 sheet ad-van advertising also runs during specific events. The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D., has announced the renewal of the negotiated agreement between the Department and the Chewing Gum Industry for a three year period (2011 – 2014). The initiative aims to build on the success of previous GLT awareness and education programmes to date and introduces several new elements to help raise awareness of the impact of gum litter and encourage proper gum disposal. The agreement represents a continuing commitment by industry over a three year period and includes new agreed mechanisms to further enhance and reinvigorate the campaign. The GLT education campaign will begin in November 2011 and a local authority awareness campaign will follow in April 2012. Local Authority Participation Local authorities are invited to participate in the campaign and are required to hold a campaign launch at the start of the campaign in order to raise awareness of their participation, highlighting that:
